Turn an Unused Corner Into Your Favorite Reading Spot

What better way to make more time for reading, or simply to focus, than a cozy, calming reading corner? That’s the dream. I picture somewhere soft and welcoming, a little spot that helps us turn our attention toward what matters and away from distractions. And there are plenty of those.

The best part? Many of us already have that awkward corner we don’t quite know what to do with. Too small to become a room of its own, but big enough to catch our eye and feel unfinished.

If you’d love to turn that overlooked space into a cozy reading nook that supports your goals, or simply gives you a place to unwind, you’re in the right place.

Choose a Chair That Fits the Way You Read

The first thing to choose is your chair. But how do you choose one? The real question is: how do you like to read or study? Sitting upright, lying back, or somewhere in between? Do you like to curl up or put your feet up? Think about the position in which you feel most relaxed and focused, and let that guide your choice.

Personally, I’m always drawn to a soft recliner in a neutral color, like this option from Homary. I like having a few positions to choose from, so if I start getting sleepy, I can simply sit up a little straighter.

Give Your Reading Corner a Light of Its Own

Daylight is perfect, but sometimes we want to dive into a book or an idea in the evening, too. That’s why lighting matters so much here. I wouldn’t rely on the main ceiling light alone. It often doesn’t give us enough light where we need it, and I find it a little distracting. A floor lamp or a table lamp, if there’s a table (we’ll get to that), can make the corner feel like its own little space and help us settle into what we’re doing.

Besides, lighting is always a big deal to me. Every important corner deserves a light of its own! There are plenty of lamps that could work, but I’d lean toward one with a shade, like this option from Homary, positioned to keep the light around your reading spot rather than spreading it throughout the room. The idea is to light the corner for reading, rather than simply add another light to the room, although it can certainly contribute to that cozy evening glow, too.

Keep Your Book and Your Cup Within Reach

Once we’ve chosen the lighting, it’s time to complete the experience. We’re sitting with a book, relaxed and enjoying ourselves. But wait, what could make this moment even better? A cup of coffee or tea, or even just our water bottle. And once we’ve settled into that perfect position, the last thing we want is to get up every time we need a sip.

This is where a small side table, shelf, or cabinet comes in. We don’t need much, just enough room for a drink, our phone, and perhaps the book when we’re ready for a break. A little storage underneath can be useful, too, especially if we like to keep a notebook or a few favorite reads nearby.

Pay attention to the height as well as the size. A beautiful table isn’t very helpful if we have to lean down or stretch awkwardly every time we reach for our cup. Think about where your hand naturally falls when you’re sitting comfortably, and look for a surface within easy reach. It should feel like a little companion to the chair, not a piece of furniture competing with it. We want enough space to put things down without crowding the seat or making it difficult to get in and out.

Add Softness With Pillows and a Throw

Next comes an equally important touch: pillows and a blanket. Partly for comfort and partly, of course, for looks. Why not romanticize our little corner if we can? Your choices will depend on the colors in your home and the style of the room, but a soft, inviting pillow can make the chair feel even cozier. Add a throw to break up a solid color, or choose one in a similar shade for a softer, more coordinated look.

Frame the Space With a Rug

The last piece I consider essential for a corner like this is a rug. Round, square, rectangular, as long as there’s a rug! Why? Because, to me, it’s the best way to frame the area and signal that this little spot is separate from the rest of the room. There are other ways to create that feeling, including the lighting we’ve already discussed and a few ideas we’ll get to next, but a rug is my clear favorite.

Make the Corner Feel at Home

Finally, how do we make sure the corner feels at home in the rest of the space? Start by keeping it connected to your home’s overall style.

The rest depends on the room and the corner itself. You could place a bookcase beside the chair to create a backdrop and draw the eye toward your reading spot. Another option is to paint just a section of wall, roughly three to six feet wide depending on the size of the corner, to frame it and give it the feeling of a space of its own. And if there’s room for a beautiful plant, all the better.

I hope this has given you a little inspiration for your own reading corner. More than anything, I hope it becomes a cozy, magical little place you love spending time in.
